Ramón Cárdenas

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Designed Objects and Sculpture.

Ramon Jimenez Cardenas blends sculpture and design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He uses conceptual design as his prefered approach to creating objects and sculpture pieces. His typologies and materials seen in objects are often derived from design insights seen in his hometown Oaxaca, Mexico. These insights are mostly seen in architectural structures which carry narrative and a graphic language of their own. His work has been exhibit in Chicago, Tokyo, Milán, Mexico city, New York and Vienna.

Sculpture, installation, and drawings with lines in thread are the means of my artistic work. My reflections are based on memories, absences, and impressions. I work with everyday materials loaded with strong meanings to make sculptures and two dimensional pieces. From a personal loss that I suffered, I create images and objects that come alive as a metaphor for death. I think about the disposability and emptiness of modern society. My early work begins as an investigation of historical events and violent conflicts that have taken place in Mexico, therefore the content and symbols in my artistic work are directly influenced by the personal and political tragedies of my country. I work with images that circulate in the media about drug trafficking and organized crime. I embroider images onto handkerchiefs of crime scenes that have been made public.
